It’s no secret that the holidays can affect your waistline. All the parties, cocktail hours, family gatherings, and food-related gifts can prove tempting even to the strictest dieter. However, all the goodies this time of year can also have detrimental effects for your smile. Sugar, alcoholic beverages, and disruptions to your schedule can increase your risk for decay and other serious concerns. While you can lose a few extra pounds after January 1, dental damage is permanent. Fortunately, by following a few simple tips, your sparkling smile will look great in this year’s Christmas photos – and all year long. For more information about dental health, contact Dockland Dental Studio at (03) 9021-9487.

1.      Bring Your Toothbrush to That Christmas Party

Ideally, you should brush your teeth after every meal (waiting at least 30 minutes so food particles have a chance to leave your mouth). If you have a busy social life this holiday season, you may forget to maintain your normal dental hygiene. Why not tuck a toothbrush into your bag or glove compartment before you head out for the night? Brushing after your meal with help prevent decay and keep your breath minty fresh. Plus, it may discourage you from nibbling on hour d’oeuvres later in the evening.

2.      Curtail the Candy Canes

Candy canes and other peppermint treats may make you feel like your breath is fresh. However, bacteria in your mouth will feed off of the sugars, forming acids which will erode your tooth enamel. As this process continues, cavities will develop. Instead of sucking on a candy cane to freshen your breath, reach for sugarless gum – or better yet, your toothbrush.

3.      Sip Water in between Punch

Of course, the holidays wouldn’t be any fun without a little splurging now and again. When you do choose to indulge, water can go a long way to counteract dental damage. Drink water along with your meals, and alternate water with other beverages at your Christmas parties. This will help wash away sugar and other bacteria. Plus, it’s the responsible choice if your punch is intended for adults only.

4.      Limit Champagne at Your Holiday Cocktail Party

Champagne and other carbonated beverages will erode your tooth enamel, causing discoloration and an increased risk for decay. One glass at your office party won’t hurt, but try to alternate champagne with other, less acidic beverages throughout the holiday season.

5.      Set a New Year’s Resolution for Your Dental Health

Even if you find it difficult to maintain these good dental habits, the New Year is always a great time to start fresh. Make 2016 the year in which you take charge of your oral health. If you do not already do so, start scheduling your routine exams and cleanings. Revamp your at-home hygiene, and make dietary changes to protect your smile. A few simple changes can go a long way.
