Porcelain Veneers

Perhaps the most comprehensive and coveted cosmetic dental treatment, porcelain veneers correct many imperfections with a single procedure. In years past, veneers looked bulky and were deemed “chicklets” (like the rectangular Mexican gum/candy) by the media. Today, however, contemporary dental porcelains are thinner, stronger, and look more natural when properly crafted by a ceramist. Thin and durable, contemporary porcelain veneers reflect light like natural tooth enamel for a stunning appearance.

The One-Procedure Smile Makeover

The list below explains the issues veneers correct, as well as the procedures that veneers replace. As you’ll see, veneers have earned their moniker “one-procedure smile makeover” and “instant orthodontics.”

  • Chips – in lieu of bonding or crowns
  • Stains – instead of bonding, crowns, or chemical bleaching
  • Spaces – an alternative to braces, bonding, or crowns
  • Malformations – instead of bonding or crowns
  • Misalignment – so braces are not necessary
  • Irregular size/unevenness – in lieu of bonding or crowns

The Veneer Process

You’ll attend two clinical appointments for the preparation and placement of your veneers. At the first visit, we will prepare your teeth for the restorations and take impressions. The doctor will select from a shade guide the perfect color for your veneers, as well. An analysis of your facial features and smile symmetry will also help in designing veneers that will look natural, yet beautiful on you. Before you leave, we’ll attach temporary veneers to your prepared teeth.

During the week or two between your scheduled appointments, your veneers will be carefully hand made by a dental ceramist in a laboratory. The restorations will be delivered to us prior to your second visit, at which time we’ll replace your temporary veneers with the permanent restorations. A check of your occlusion may indicate the need for some slight alterations. By the time you leave the second appointment, you’ll have the smile of your dreams.

Caring for Porcelain Veneers

At home, you only need to brush twice daily for about two minutes per session, and floss once – the same routine you should have been practicing before your veneers. Scheduled checkups and cleanings every six months at Docklands Dental Studio, and if you retain great oral health, your veneers could last twenty years or longer.
